"Our goal with v9 was to further enhance the availability of our sync solution by allowing users to sync and share mobile data and media over-the-air via the cloud, and to extend the reach of Funambol to an even larger customer base," Amit Chawla (News - Alert), chief executive officer at Funambol said in a statement.

"Our service provider customers are excited about how our new mobile sign-up expands their 'Funambol (News - Alert) powered' deployments by eliminating the need for desktop sign-up. Additionally, iPhone users will appreciate the ease of wirelessly sharing pictures compared to alternative commercial solutions. Android (News - Alert) users will be offered an enhanced experience syncing calendars over-the-air with other cloud services and computers," Chawla added.

The company is of the opinion that smartphones and wireless devices are rapidly proliferating, with people accessing more data and rich media on mobile devices than ever before. To meet this demand, Funambol v9 software is designed to simplify over-the-air sharing of iPhone pictures with Flickr, Picasa, Facebook and PCs.

The version wirelessly syncs calendars on Android phones, tablets and devices with other cloud services and computers.

The software also allows on-device mobile signup with an easy three step setup process while on-the-go, without requiring a PC, and supports localization of the Funambol Portal into multiple languages.

Moreover, the new version removes the 90 day limit on the myFUNAMBOL Portal to let users easily and freely sync and share contacts, calendars, pictures and more via the cloud.

Funambol has been offering open source-based solutions for push email and mobile cloud sync as well as device management and a platform for mobilizing apps and data.

Funambol is based on the SyncML (OMA DS) standard for data synchronization that is built into many mobile phones. This enables Funambol to support billions of wireless devices.

Last year the company received the 2010 award for Best Communications Solution from the Telecom Council of Silicon Valley. Funambol was granted the Graham Bell SPIFFY award by 20+ global carriers representing more than two billion subscribers, who evaluated more than 100 startup companies.
