- Alert) VS-R family from Spansion will enable wireless handset makers to deliver economical entry-level and feature phones to emerging markets such as China, India, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Spansion has designed the family for cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) applications such as remote medical monitoring equipment, fleet communications management and vending machines.
The company notes a newly released report from ABI research that reveals which shipments of ultra-low-cost handsets will grow to more than 360 million by 2015.
ABI’s report also indicates that the shipments of low-cost handsets will reach 249 million by the same time period.
Spansion points out that these new consumers search for competitively priced handsets that can offer them facilities such as basic Internet connectivity, cameras and gaming. Based on MirrorBit charge trapping technology, the Spansion VS-R family ensures delivery of a high-performance and cost-efficient memory solution to wireless handset makers all across the world.
"Time to market is critical for handset manufacturers in today's competitive wireless market," said Ping-Hsing Lu, vice president of wireless communication business unit, MediaTek (News - Alert). "With the qualification of Spansion's VS-R family, our customers can deliver solutions to market more quickly and with less investment."
