Spansion Inc, an electronics maker, recently introduced Spansion (News
- Alert) VS-R family of memory solutions with densities of 64Mb, 128Mb and 256Mb. Based on MirrorBit charge trapping technology, the VS-R family helps deliver a high performance and cost efficient memory solution to wireless handset makers worldwide.
According to industry estimates, the market for entry level, feature phones will grow at a dramatic pace over the upcoming years. Shipments of ultra-low-cost handsets are predicted to grow to more than 360 million by 2015, representing a 2010-2015 growth rate of over 22 percent, while shipments of low-cost handsets will reach 249 million by the same time period, according to ABI research. Competitive pricing will be the key to grabbing the market share in the emerging markets in the Asian, American and Latin American countries.
According to Spansion, its VS-R family is designed to deliver a high performance and cost efficient memory solution to wireless handset makers worldwide. The technology will enable wireless handset makers to deliver economical entry-level and feature phones to emerging markets such as China, India, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America, officials at Spansion explained in a press release.
In a release, the company further noted that the family is also ideally suited for cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) applications like remote medical monitoring equipment, fleet communications management and vending machines.
All three densities---64Mb, 128Mb and 256Mb---used in the VS-R family are in full production and supported by major wireless chipsets, including the latest products from MediaTek (News - Alert), Spreadtrum, Infineon, and others.
The family gives support for low power operation with a 1.8V power supply
“The Spansion VS-R family is built upon Spansion MirrorBit charge trapping technology to provide our customers with a high performance and cost-efficient Flash memory solution that enables OEMs to deliver regionalized phones to price sensitive markets. Additionally, we are able to provide this benefit to M2M applications too,” executive vice president, wireless solutions group of Spansion noted in a statement.
