The popularity of the open source software development is changing the way organizations use, and commercialize software. AllJoyn is an open source project for mobile software being driven out of Qualcomm Innovation Center, a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm (News
- Alert) Incorporated. AllJoyn is a peer-to-peer technology framework that enables ad-hoc, proximity-based, device-to-device communication without the use of an intermediary server.
According to a press release, AllJoyn is developed to allow developers to shape apps and services that leverage P2P connectivity, which can be constituted using any short-range radio link such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, on any AllJoyn-enabled device without the need for a 3G network or Wi-Fi Internet access point.
AllJoyn was developed to enable secure, ad hoc, proximity-based communication networks. It addresses transparent device and service discovery, networking functionality, message routing and also provides a security framework for encrypted and authenticated communications.
Rob Chandhok, president of Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. commented that QuIC is excited to launch the AllJoyn open source project with the hope that it will drive innovation and creativity by empowering developers and device manufacturers to create new types of user experiences that expand the use of peer-to-peer technology beyond just traditional wireless handsets and AllJoyn technology has the ability to help mainstream proximity-based P2P connectivity and we look forward to the industry participating in this open source project to help us evolve the technology.
AllJoyn allows for a superior user experience with easy discovery among devices, simplified group formation and low latency, regardless of how the wireless connection is established.
QuIC will show AllJoyn P2P technology at GSMA's Mobile World Congress in the company's exhibit, located in Exhibit Hall 8, 8B53.
