InterDigital and Cinterion Announce M2M Collaboration

InterDigital, wireless technology developer for mobile devices, networks and services, announced its machine-to-machine (M2M) solution association with Cinterion, a provider of M2M communication modules.

The system architecture offers end-to-end service capabilities for integrating M2M devices with cellular networks. With this, network operators can remotely manage and control M2M devices and offer M2M network services to third parties.

Both InterDigitaland Cinterion are active with the ETSI (News - Alert) Technical Committee on M2M.

This architecture is being standardized at the ETSI. Both of the companies have contributed for defining the system architecture, functionality and procedures, company officials said.

Cinterion (News - Alert) is thrilled to work with InterDigital and the ETSI Technical Committee to lead the M2M marketplace toward pioneering technology and drive standardization protocols that are shaping the industry and motivating cooperation and evolution across the wireless industry,” said Axel Hansman, vice president, strategy and marketing communication at Cinterion, in a statement.

Cellular operators are trying to incorporate the potential of M2M communications in a technically efficient and profitable manner. M2M traffic flows through the operator’s network. But they are unable to make significant revenue from M2M business.

The other issue with M2M segment is that operators need domain-specific access networks to connect a defined set of M2M devices to third-party M2M service provider systems, according to company officials.

“We applaud Cinterion for their leadership in being the first to integrate the next-generation M2M gateway technology into their products,” said James J. Nolan, executive vice president, research and development, InterDigital (News - Alert), in a statement.

“Given Cinterion’s significant presence as the worldwide leading supplier of cellular M2M platforms, this represents a key step forward toward driving the solution into the expanding M2M market,” Nolan added.

InterDigital’s solution interconnects cellular and non-cellular networks, allowing M2M devices to communicate. This M2M architecture will enable several M2M use cases such as healthcare, transportation and security to remotely manage and control cellular and non-cellular M2M devices.

The architecture also enables the creation of standardized service platforms and APIs, providing a much needed and attractive way for the cellular operator to enable and capitalize on the boom in wireless M2M deployments.

InterDigital also announced its collaboration with technology partner Continuous Computing (News - Alert) for developing solutions for the intelligent management of traffic at the network edge, which the company considers as the next frontier in addressing the bandwidth crunch.
