CTIA: Tekelec Introduces M2M Service Enablement


M2M service enablement and cellular traffic analysis are two areas of focus for Tekelec (News - Alert) this week at CTIA in Orlando, Fla.

The company’s new M2M service enablement solution combines the company’s device data management, performance management, session management, subscriber management and messaging solutions in an effort to help service providers and their partners to support and scale machine-to-machine services more efficiently.

Joanne Steinberg (News - Alert), director of strategic marketing at Tekelec, explained that this solution will allow for more enriched M2M with device data and policy. For example, she said, this solution could enable the service provider or third-party provider to transmit smart meter data at set off-peak times. The policy control feature would allow the provider in this case to set rules around when data is transmitted, she said.

The solution could also allow an M2M provider to prioritize traffic based on application, she added. For example, medical M2M traffic would probably be of a higher priority than vending machine M2M traffic, she said, and the Tekelec solution would allow the service provider to make sure it was treated as such.

She added that M2M providers and users won’t necessarily want every M2M device to have its own identity. So the Tekelec M2M solution allows devices to pool multiple devices and give them one identity. That allows for easier management of the devices and can enable the service provider to assign a bucket of bandwidth for groups of M2M devices.

The Tekelec M2M service enablement solution also addresses the important issue of security. One way it does that is by allowing those who operate M2M services to receive alerts if an M2M device is in the wrong location, Steinberg said. That way, the owners and operators of M2M-enabled devices will know if their devices have been stolen or tampered with.

Also at CTIA (News - Alert), Tekelec introduced the Diameter Intelligence Hub. It provides network troubleshooting capabilities without the need for separate probes, reducing the number of network probes. The DIH collects and stores Diameter traffic for use in troubleshooting and data export activities.
