MontaVista and Rightware Join to Create Automotive In-Vehicle Infotainment Solutions


Automotive ad hoc networking is an emerging technology for on-the-road communications. In order to offer vehicle-to-vehicle infrastructure communications including communication-based automotive applications and road safety services, MontaVista (News - Alert) and Rightware Oy, the company in embedded 3D user interface (UI) technologies have partnered to develop automotive infotainment solution. Its requirements are very similar to the mobile device requirements with the quality and support needs of the telecom carrier world.

 According to a press release, MontaVista offers 11 years of experience in developing high quality embedded Linux solutions with millions of devices running MontaVista Linux in smart phones, consumer electronics, office automation devices, medical devices and much more.

"MontaVista has developed a unique expertise where we've combined our experience in the consumer electronics and mobile market, with our experience in the carrier market where high quality and long support cycles are demanded," says Dan Cauchy, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. "Combine this with 3D UI solutions from our partner Rightware, and no other company can offer this level of functionality and experience for Linux-based solutions in automotive."

 This platform supports high performance graphics, multimedia capability, internet connectivity via WiFi (News - Alert) or 3G/4G, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, media and music management, contacts management, email and internet browser and GPS location aware services. 

MontaVista Linux provides high quality, reliability and long support lifecycles with ongoing maintenance and updates for a decade or more.

MontaVista is showcasing a jointly developed solution on an automotive reference platform that showcases their joint capabilities and ease of integration with 3D automotive solutions, including instrument cluster and IVI capabilities.

In other company news, TMCnet reported that MontaVista Software has stated that they have entered into a multi-year agreement with Robert Bosch Car Multimedia to develop and deliver Linux-based software solutions for BOSCH.
