Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology, which allow both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices of the same ability, are on course to become the great success stories in mobile communication industry, says telecom solutions vendor Orga Systems (News - Alert).
Given its assessment, M2M connections are likely to multiply dramatically over the coming days.
Citing the prediction of IT analysts, Orga says worldwide enterprise cellular M2M connections will increase from 81.8 million in 2011 to almost 217.5 million in 2015. During this period, connectivity revenue will rise from $3.1 billion to U.S. $6.7 billion.
The billing solutions vendor, however warns that the success of M2M may pose both challenges and opportunities.
Orga’s prediction comes barely a week after Compass Intelligence stated that it expects the M2M and connected-device market to reach 87 million endpoints by 2015, with an annual growth rate of 25 percent.
One of the obstacles operators are facing, according to Orga, is that the target market for M2M is fragmented into a variety of industries. These include the intelligent buildings and utilities sectors, where the use of mobile networks to connect the associated systems is expected to be widespread because of convenience and ease of deployment.
Finding solutions that remove overheads is the only option for operators to deal successfully with fragmented market.
In line with this, the vendor says, operators need to find more efficient ways to manage the connectivity of the devices, as the processes used for current mobile telephones will not scale cost-effectively.
Orga’s customers include América Móvil, Entel, K’cell, KPN (News - Alert) Group, Meditel, mobilkom austria group, Orange, Sunrise, TIM Italy, TIM Brazil, and Telecom Personal.
