Networking solutions provider Cisco (News
- Alert) has just launched the Cisco 819 integrated services router machine-to-machine gateway, the latest addition to its core routing infrastructure portfolio, aimed at assisting in deployment of mission critical applications.
Leveraging the Cisco ISR 819, customers can deploy mission critical applications such as ATM machines and ambulances with confidence. The new platform brings leadership in routing, security, and optimization to the M2M market.
“The Internet of Things represents the next evolution of the Internet and has the potential to change the world for the better,” Dave Evans, chief futurist / chief technology officer, Internet Business Solutions Group, Cisco, in a statement. “As we approach a world of 50 billion devices connected to the Internet, technologies that provide an always-on, secure connection, will be key enablers of the Internet of Things.”
The Cisco 819 router enables organizations to extend the IP network from an enterprise to a small remote or branch office such as an ATM, kiosk, or mobile infrastructure over a reliable connection, company officials said.

- Alert) functions as an integrated platform that extends corporate 3G/4G wireless WAN network services to small devices in challenging environments, far beyond the headquarters.
The utilization of the new router will bring new business opportunities by adding networking capabilities to previously non-networked devices and by supporting standalone GPS, which location-based applications can use to retrieve real-time GPS data.
Cisco IOS Software is powering the Cisco 819. The new router supports advanced security features including firewall, intrusion prevention, content filtering, and encryption for VPNs. It also offers QoS features for optimizing voice and video applications in remote sites.
In another significant development, Cisco also announced the acquisition of Versly, developers of software that integrates collaboration capabilities via a plug-in into Microsoft (News
- Alert) Office applications. With this acquisition, Cisco will enhance its collaboration offerings and improve the user experience by integrating social technologies within the business applications.
