Telematics Company inthinc Technology Solutions (News
- Alert) Inc., has named Carleton Watkins, inthinc vice president of research and development, to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee.
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000, pursuant to the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999. Formerly a part of the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
Activities of the Administration contribute to ensuring safety in motor carrier operations through strong enforcement of safety regulations; targeting high-risk carriers and commercial motor vehicle drivers; improving safety information systems and commercial motor vehicle technologies; strengthening commercial motor vehicle equipment and operating standards; and increasing safety awareness.
Specifically working on the 'EOBR sub-committee' to focus on electronic on-board recorder (EOBR) technology, Watkins joins an elite team of telematics and fleet management leaders to assist in standardizing safety criteria for commercial fleets as the country continues to move toward requiring electronic driver logs for commercial carriers.
"Many of our customers approach us asking for clarification on the latest regulatory guidelines and for assistance in helping them meet those requirements," said Watkins in a statement.
"Having a presence and voice on these regulatory committees allows us to better serve our customers, while contributing to the overall mission of the FMCSA and commercial carrier industry to improve safety for all drivers," Watkins added.
Watkins is also a member of the American Trucking Association's 'Technology and Maintenance Council.
The inthinc EOBR, a primary component of the inthinc waySmart solution is a comprehensive fleet management and driver safety solution is natively integrated with other cost-saving functionality including fuel usage and idle monitoring, as well as GPS location information, trip routes and stop report details. Along with other waySmart driver safety features such as in-cab verbal coaching alerts for speeding, idling, seat belt use and aggressive driving -- inthinc's EOBR prevents fatigued driving and supports the FMCSA's 'Compliance, Safety, Accountability' (CSA) initiative, clarified the company statement.
