Telenor Connexion is providing a machine-to-machine solution to Amelti, the companies announced today at the CTIA (News - Alert) Enterprise & Applications show in San Diego.
Amelti is using M2M to enable connectivity to SmartFeeder, a product it supplies to shipping, transportation, navy and military, power generation and other industries that want to reduce and track fuel consumption, automate additive dispensing, minimize emissions, and do fleet management.
Gwenn Bjornstad Larsson, chief marketing officer at Telenor (News - Alert) Connexion, says her employer’s strategy is to provide M2M consulting and integrated solutions to U.S. companies that want to take their applications international, as well as to other companies that want to move into the U.S. market. Amelti, she tells TMCnet, is an example of the latter. The M2M solution provided by Telenor Connexion for Amelti, she says, allows the company to gather and share information from fuel additive injection systems.
Telenor Connexion is a specialty M2M business created by Sweden’s Telenor Group in 2008. It got its start as a division of Telenor Group and in the late 1990s did pioneering M2M work with Volvo and Securitas Direct. Bjornstad Larsson says a few years ago Telenor Group really began to see the value of M2M and decided it no longer made sense to keep this important functionality within one business unit in Sweden, so it launched Telenor Connexion. The company’s technical staff remains in Sweden, but it has a manager in Los Angeles and sales people in Cleveland; Santa Fe, N.M.; and Washington, D.C.,
Earlier this year Telenor Connexion sold its platform, which includes an API service portal and M2M functionality, to Ericsson (News
- Alert). So today Telenor Connexion leases M2M services back from Ericsson.
What Telenor Connexion brings to the table, Bjornstad Larsson explains, is consulting that helps customers understand their M2M requirements and how they can be met. Telenor Connexion also has its own service and support desk, which specialize in M2M-related issues. As part of that, Telenor Connexion offers what it calls Proactive Service Awareness, so customers can monitor their apps and devices. Bjornstad Larsson adds that Telenor Connexion also probes all the networks of the roaming partners of parent Telenor Group to ensure service reliability and consistency.
While other well-known companies such as AT&T and Sprint are pushing their M2M solutions in the U.S., Bjornstad Larsson says that “AT&T (News
- Alert) and Sprint don’t have the capability to take [customers’ M2M solutions] outside the U.S. They don’t have the kind of roaming that we do, or the knowledge.”
She says Telenor Connexion is also unique in terms of its “quality approach to understand each and every application and to understand reliability.”
