The Year Ahead - with Globecomm's Andy Silberstein

TMCnet recently asked some of the leading lights in the industry for their thoughts about 2011 and what’s in store for the year ahead.

Here’s what Andy Silberstein, vice president and general manager of Globecomm Network Services, had to say.

As the number of mobile devices continue to multiply, there is no doubt that the wireless M2M market will continue to grow. But, what role will the rural operator play? Globecomm predicts that 2012 will be the year that rural carriers begin to benefit from and leverage growth across the wireless M2M Market.

“The wireless M2M market itself is ripe for vertical applications including those in the energy, health care, telemedicine, automotive, agriculture, maritime and shipping industries. In the energy and mining industries specifically, companies with locations across the U.S. have the opportunity to integrate significant opex efficiencies into their operational information flow with the use of M2M communications.

“Rural operators are also well positioned to benefit from these services. Although it will take time for rural operators to fully establish their own M2M value proposition, they are realizing that they can get involved now. For example, as M2M rolls out in the automotive and health industries, rural operators will benefit from an increase in roaming revenue associated with the roaming M2M devices. There will also be new M2M service providers that bundle service offerings to address specialized markets such as the energy sector in more rural areas.”

Globecomm operates CDMA and GSM core switches capable of providing 2G (GSM), 2.5G (GPRS/EDGE) and 3G (WCDMA) cellular network services including voice, high-speed Internet, SMS, MMS, voicemail, prepaid and post-paid billing, E911 and CALEA. They can enable mobile service to extend an existing cellular network into new territory, overlay advanced services on a legacy network, or create entirely new networks
