Freescale (News - Alert), a provider of embedded semiconductors for the automotive, consumer, industrial and networking markets, announced that GM, American multinational automotive corporation, which has been using Freescale silicon for its OnStar platform for the past 15 years, is going to continue on the same strong note. The company said that its i.MX 6Solo applications processor has been selected by GM for use in the OnStar telematics system, GM's in-car connectivity system.
Increasing demand for high-performance, smart connectivity is changing the landscape of products that enhance consumer in-car experiences. This is spurring newer growth avenues for silicon providers that manufacture automotive-grade products which are designed for addressing the needs of the automotive industry.
GMs decision to use Freescale's i.MX 6Solo processor was based on the advanced security capabilities provided by the product. The market for devices supporting connected intelligence has expanded as the volume of data which moves in and out of automobiles has also increased. This has made it important for deployment of processors which can enhance security for protecting data transfer critical to both the customers and automakers. iSuppli, analyst firm for the industry, has estimated that the market for semiconductors which are used in automotive infotainment systems will expand from $5.7 billion (USD) in 2010 to $8.4 billion (USD) in 2016.
In a release, Bernd Lienhard, vice president and general manager of Freescale's Multimedia Applications Division, said, "Freescale is pleased that our i.MX 6Solo device will play a defining role in helping advance GM's world-class OnStar system. This design win highlights Freescale's leadership in delivering processing capabilities that meet and exceed the demanding requirements of the world's top automakers."
Freescale's i.MX6 series processors deployment within the OnStar Telematics systems further builds on the popularity and reliability standing of Freescale products within the global automotive market. The single-, dual- and quad-core i.MX 6 series processors currently drive a number automotive infotainment and or telematics platforms.
