The system is designed to help the power distribution companies to reduce the regularity and length of power outages. Deploying of Arctic Control will let distribution companies check the field devices used in the electrical network from remote for immediate restoration of power.

“The strategy for the Distribution Companies in the Smart Networks is to divide them in small zones,” Jyrki Penttonen, CEO of Viola Systems, said in a statement. “In the event of a power fault, the effected zone is isolated from the other areas. Arctic Control provides the vital communication link between the centralized control room and monitoring and operating the medium voltage field devices.”

Viola systems provide wireless connectivity solutions to seamlessly link devices located at various locations. The various solutions offered by Viola are used in electricity systems to connect substations and delivery transformers to central electricity network. They are also used for connecting remote security cameras to the main network for transmitting video footage.

Arctic Control is featured with remote monitoring of all controls and system equipments and monitoring of battery condition and charging. The switchgear motor is protected using over current detection facility. The system has inbuilt communication protection and dependable GPRS connectivity for routine supervising and revival. The system is amenable to IEC (News - Alert)-104 SCADA communication protocols.

Some of the benefits offered by the system include:

* Marked progress in the quality of electrical distribution, while there is considerable reduction in the frequency and duration of power blackouts.

* Reduced spending in grid maintenance and equipment replacement expenses, thus saving on capital investments.

* Direct cost savings due to reduced preventive maintenance expenses.

“A secure and reliable communication is vital in successful implementation of a Smart Grid especially when it is concerning the Medium Voltage,” Penttonen said. “Arctic Control has been specifically designed to meet the high availability and security needs of a Distribution Company.”

Arctic Control are designed and tested for use in sever field settings. Currently the systems are used by some of the leading companies in Nordic area.
