The service provider this week revealed it added 2.7 million wireless customers in the last quarter, making it close to a record quarter for additions. And its success on this front, according to reports, is due heavily to its deals with Amazon.com for the Kindle, Barnes & Noble with its Nook and Sony Corp. for its Reader. Indeed, AT&T (News - Alert) today reported it added 1 million such devices in the fourth quarter.

As reported in the November issue of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine, a TMC (News - Alert) publication, AT&T is keen on machine-to-machine, aka M2M, technology, which uses wireless networks to connect a wide variety of devices such as books, digital picture frames and more.

“It’s a significant type of application for our enterprise customers today and a whole emerging sector of consumer electronics,” Hamish Caldwell, executive director of product marketing management at AT&T Business Solutions, said about M2M in the November issue of INTERNET TELEPHONY.

As for the iPhone (News - Alert), AT&T turned on service to 3.1 million of those. That’s the second best quarter for iPhone turn ups thus far.
