The four major trends which will transform the mobile industry as identified by IDC are as follows:

  1. Price crunch and the decrease of revenue growth for mobile voice, has emphasized the importance of mobile data, mobile broadband, and the significance of applications for operators as well as for device manufacturers.
  2. Smartphones has turned out to be the driving force of the global mobile market, with 15 percent of all devices shipped, this is going to be very significant in both mature as well as emerging markets. Yet another driving force in the market will be the evolution of connected devices, such as embedded laptops and a flood of industrial and machine to machine (M2M) devices.
  3. 3. 2010 is expected to bring in significant changes in the Mobile Operating System (OS) landscape. New entrants who have been acclaiming open standards (Android (News - Alert)) and intuitive design and navigation (Mac OS X and webOS) have gathered strong end-user and handset vendor interest in a market that was once controlled by a few big players like BlackBerry (News - Alert), Symbian, and Windows Mobile.
  4. 4. In the infrastructure segment, mobile broadband will continue to be the focus for 2010 and Operators in mature markets will continue to implement HSPA. WiMAX (News - Alert) will be a key driver in many developing markets, while LTE will begin to hog the limelight towards the end of the year and into 2011.
Courtney Munroe, group vice president of worldwide telecommunications at IDC states that the mobile sector is in transition from its earlier focus on subscriber growth. The expanding demographics of smartphones and new operating systems, the arrival of mobile broadband, and the tremendous growth of applications and content have combined together to transform the landscape of mobile telecommunications.
