Mobile operator 3, which has UK’s biggest 3G network, has reportedly selected mobile messaging and communication specialist aql to provide machine-to-machine connectivity via the company’s high-speed mobile data network. The agreement will enable aql to re-sell access to the 3 UK network for the increasing number of connected devices like digital signage and traffic lights, which can be accessed, monitored and updated using a high-speed mobile internet connection. aql specialises in a wide range of wholesale voice applications to Enterprise and Telecommunications operators in addition to SMS products designed to improve the communication options available to business users.
aql will closely work with 3 UK, aiming at bringing ten data partners on board each quarter. aql will also provide all integration and configuration outside of the 3 UK network, thereby reducing ongoing management risk and cost. Machine to machine connections need a reliable data standard such as 3G with a long lifespan to be able to provide connectivity on a continuous basis. In addition to this several number of devices like surveillance cameras, lone-worker safety devices and in-vehicle diagnostics also come with 3G capabilities embedded. Both companies are also working together with top manufacturers to offer a range of SIM solutions with a greater lifespan and heat tolerance, as well as technology which enables easier embedding of SIMS during the manufacturing process.
In a release, Dr. Adam Beaumont, aql’s managing director, said 3 UK’s ongoing network expansion makes them a valuable partner for aql because machine-to-machine access requires a fast and reliable data connection.
David York, MVNO account manager at 3 UK, said that as the company’s network continues to grow it is looking at ways to capitalize on the ever-expanding footprint. Considering the significant investment that the company is making in the network, they expect to have a dedicated high-speed data network with nearly 98.5 percent outdoor coverage by the end of 2010. A broad and fast data network provides a good opportunity for companies with connected devices. 3 UK is working with aql as it will be able to help 3 UK expand their reach into this space and bring the benefits of 3 UK’s network to a variety of connected devices in the most effective manner.
3 offers competitive pricing and give customers a range of ways to stay connected at home or abroad. To enable this service they are building the UK's best high-speed mobile broadband network. 3 UK is also a member of the HWL group of 3G companies, which include 3G operations in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Macau and Sweden.
