Embedded Mobile and M2M Device Market to Reach $19 Billion by 2014: Juniper Research

Juniper Research has released a report on the latest trends in the mobile-connected M2M market.
Story continues below ↓

According to Juniper Research (News - Alert), revenues from mobile-connected M2M and embedded devices will rise to $18.9 billion globally by 2014 with consumer and commercial telematics and in-vehicle applications accounting for over one third of the total.

“Despite the ongoing downturn in the automotive sector in developed markets, the most promising M2M area remains the automotive industry,” Anthony Cox (News - Alert), senior analyst at Juniper Research, said.

Cox added that there has been a slowdown in the adoption of telematics because new car sales have stalled. However, by 2014 in developed markets over half of new vehicles will be sold with telematics devices using cellular connections.

Other areas Juniper Research said will contribute significantly to M2M revenues include Mobile Connected Buildings and Utility Metering. While the market for Mobile Connected Buildings is driven by security needs, the Utility Metering demands is driven by regulatory initiatives in Europe and economic stimulus funds in the United States.

In February, ABI Research released a new report Smart Meters for Smart Grids which stated that the number of smart electric meters deployed worldwide will rise from a 2009 level of 76 million to reach about 212 million in 2014, TMCnet reported.

Operators are now starting to view the market for embedded devices and M2M as a market in its own right, rather than an add-on to existing activity, the research said.

To grab the market opportunity for embedded devices and M2M effectively, operators need to consider reappraising accounting practices and form alliances and partnerships with M2M specialists, Juniper Research suggested.

The research also noted that there is a growing trend for SIM cards to be integrated directly into devices, rather than provisioned at a later date in the “aftermarket.”
The report analyses the current state of play in the Embedded Mobile and M2M market and presents six year forecasts for key mobile M2M parameters and attributable service revenues, officials at Juniper Research added.
