Sprint, Walsh Wireless Launch M2M Device to Support Usage-Based Insurance for Vehicles

Walsh Wireless Data Logger is an innovative product designed to meet the growing needs of the relatively new Usage-based Insurance or “UBI” market.

Usage-based Insurance is an innovative concept that charges customers based on individual vehicle use and driving behavior. This approach yields competitive advantage to insurance companies as it helps them improve their risk assessment process, reduce customer churn and ultimately reduce the claims received.
The UBI method encourages drivers to follow safe driving habits and use the vehicle minimum. Drivers could see a reduction in their premiums by being rewarded for low mileage and/or safe driving habits.

Walsh Data Logger enables insurance companies to wirelessly monitor in real-time the performance of a vehicle, its location and the driver’s driving pattern through an easy-to-use, self-installed device, the companies said.

Alternatively, the solution can also benefit government entities and businesses that need to better manage large fleets of vehicles.
“This is one of many excellent examples of how we work with various industries to radically change business models to drive more value for developers, customers and end-users,” Wayne Ward, vice president of Emerging Solutions, Sprint, said in statement.

In October 2009, Sprint launched its Emerging Solutions Business group, which focuses exclusively on the rapid delivery of end-to-end machine-to-machine or “M2M” and mobile computing solutions to businesses and consumers. Walsh Data Logger is an innovative addition to Sprint’s M2M portfolio, the company said.

Chick Walsh, chief strategy officer, Walsh Wireless Solutions, added, “We are excited to add the Walsh DL400 and DL450 Data Logger to our ever-expanding portfolio of exclusive products and services. And furthermore, bring a value added wireless solution to the UBI Auto Insurance and Fleet Management industries.”

Earlier in March, Sprint announced partnership with Knowlagent, a provider of call center talent management solutions, to deploy RightTime technology that delivers training directly to call center agents’ desktops during periods of time when there is excess agent availability between calls, TMCnet reported.
