Ultra-Compact Module from Telit Opens up New Areas of Application for M2M Technology

Telit Wireless (News - Alert) Solutions, a major player in machine-to-machine, or "M2M," technology and a subsidiary of Telit Communications PLC, isregistering tremendous demand for what is currently the world's smallest GSM/GPRS module just a year after the commercial launch of its GE865-QUAD product.

Officials with Telit Wireless said that the GE865-QUAD is the perfect solution for areas of application in which the size and energy efficiency of the terminal are of crucial importance.

Company officials said that the module is already being used successfully in numerous applications, including the GPS radar warning system from Coyote Systems, in the person tracking system from EmFinders and in the satellite-supported tracking solution from Quake Global.

According to company officials, the GE865-QUAD, which measures just 22 x 22 x 3 mm, launched just under a year ago, is significantly smaller and more energy efficient than all previous models and the majority of rival models.

Thanks to its extremely compact size, the GE865-QUAD opens up completely new areas of application and device classes in the field of M2M communication, for instance in telemetry and telematics or in person localisation.

'In future, M2M technology will play a key role in many areas in terms of cost efficiency and process quality. One example of this is home care, but other areas of healthcare are also relevant. On the background of demographic change and burgeoning healthcare costs, technological solutions that minimise costs without compromising the quality of the service supplied are urgently needed,' said Felix Marchal, Global VP sales Telit Communication PLC, in a statement.

Marchal said that the GE865-QUAD is not only based on Telit's tried-and-tested technology and the unique service approach, but is also ideal for use in even the smallest mobile equipment thanks to its physical dimensions.

He said that this makes it a central component for future mobile applications in the M2M eco-system.

UScompany EmFinders is a prime example of the immediate benefits that the ultra-compact dimensions and energy efficiency of the GE865-QUAD offer: EmFinders uses the ultra-small Telit module in a bracelet application for the quick location of people, for instance outdoors, but also for monitoring patients with Alzheimer's disease or people who are at high risk of a heart attack.

A similar solution is made by Canadian tracking specialist Laipac Tech, whose AGPS devices can be worn as wristwatches or used as emergency mobile phones. Laipec Tech also relies on the GE865-QUAD.
