Push Messaging and Find-Me Apps for TV/STB Remote Controls

GreenPeak Technologies, a Dutch fabless semiconductor company, has added smart “push messaging” and “find-me” apps to its range of communication controllers for ZigBee RF4CE remote controls. A key feature is the ultra low power synchronization technique that allows both applications to operate with minimal impact on battery life, which can reach ten or more years.

RF remote controls provide two-way, high-speed communication and do not require line of sight as the ZigBee signal transmits through cabinets, obstacles, walls and floors, unlike infrared-based devices.

Push messaging enables new remote control capabilities, e.g. tele voting and gaming, personal messages and reminders, real-time sports results, stock information and residential sensor network monitoring. This application also allows operators to create new advertising revenues via server initiated commercial push messages on the consumers’ remote control device.

Find-me enables users to simply push a “find-me” button on the TV or STB. This results in the remote generating an alarm, beep or blinking light, thereby to make it easy to find, even when it’s out of sight. No more lost remote controls.

Cees Links, GreenPeak’s CEO said, “The functionality of today’s infra-red remote control devices has essentially not changed. But more advanced communication capabilities enable new apps and increased functionality to be introduced; for example, these low-power push messaging and find-me apps. They provide increased functionality and an enhanced user experience without affecting battery life.”
