Smart Products | Smart Connected Health Takes Center Stage at CTIA

Smart health solutions have been headline news at many IT events this year, and CTIA’s (News - Alert) wireless health programming and exhibitor pavilion is attracting a strong turnout in Las Vegas this week as wireless technology companies look to partner with companies that specialize in telemedicine, remote patient monitoring and chronic disease management.

MedApps, a leader in remote monitoring solutions for a variety of health conditions provided demonstrations of its HealthPAL device, which comes in GSM and the recently certified CDMA versions HealthPAL combines embedded cellular and Bluetooth wireless to automatically transmits patient data readings from a variety of compatible and FDA-cleared health monitors including blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, scales and pulse oximeters that measure oxygen saturation and heart rate.

HealthPAL creates a one-step, non-technical process for patients to report essential data to their care providers through HealthCOM, the MedApps patient management Web portal, with an option to track their individual records through Microsoft (News - Alert) HealthVault or Google Health. Kent Dicks, Founder and CEO of MedApps shared more details about the company’s wireless health plans in a video interview with SPEC.

Here’s a look at the HealthPAL device and its features:

Anand Iyer, the president of WellDoc (News - Alert), discussed the expansion of the WellDoc Health Platform, his company’s coordinated system for chronic disease management. WellDoc leverages wireless health to promote coordinated care for diabetes and other chronic diseases, including improvements in long-term patient adherence to treatment regimens. The WellDoc Patient Coach provides mobile reminders and real-time coaching to keep patients on track, as well as providing caregiver alerts. Behind the scenes, an expert system analyzes longitudinal patient data to support predictive modeling for outcomes and intervention.

CardioNet, a pioneer in wireless biosensors and patient data reporting for cardiovascular health, participated in a panel of wireless health leaders. Aaron Goldmuntz, Vice President Business Development for CardioNet, shared lessons learned and best practices in wireless data collection as part of an integrated care plan for chronic patient conditions. As more and more patients hear about and ask for wireless health solutions, it is essential for vendors to work closely with health providers to ensure that products are secure and certified.

All indicators are that the mobile health care market will continue to expand and that more companies will be ready to demonstrate their wireless health solutions at next year’s CTIA.
